Frequently Asked Questions
Water is the quicker option, easy to fill from a tap and empty out again if you need to move the stand between sites. Sand is more effort to fill and empty but won't evaporate or need topping up over time, and holds slightly less risk if the stand ever gets knocked, since it won't leak everywhere the way water can.
It can if the stand's left outside in freezing temperatures, and water expands as it freezes, which risks straining the base over time. If you're using it year round in a cold climate, sand avoids that problem entirely, or you can empty the water out during a hard frost and refill once it's passed.
The spring mechanism is rated to withstand gusts up to that point, so anything stronger increases the risk of the stand tipping, especially if the base isn't fully filled. On a particularly windy day it's worth either bringing the stand in or making sure the base is filled to capacity rather than partially filled, since a lighter base is far more likely to go over.
They let you tilt and roll the stand short distances without needing to lift the full filled weight, which is useful since a water or sand filled base gets heavy fast. It's still a two handed job rather than something you'd wheel around one handed, but it saves a lot of strain compared to carrying it.
It's designed to be clear enough that the poster underneath still reads well, while shielding it from rain and general weather. It can pick up a bit of glare in direct sunlight like any plastic cover would, but it shouldn't noticeably dull the colours or make the poster hard to read.
